Foundation Piecing Using Embroidery Machine

I’ve interrupted work on the baby quilt to make the Easter T-Shirts this year we are going to have a crazy patchwork egg. I am going to foundation piece it using my embroidery machine. Above is the design I made using Embird Studio – this is the third version and I suspect their might be more.

Here it is stitched out …

The corners don’t meet properly and the top is a bit pointy – onto version 4.

New Projects

I have two new, rather large, projects on the go. The first is a quilt made from the girls baby clothes.

This seemed like a lovely idea, but cutting the squares and rectangles is very time consuming.

The other project is this one by Amy Herzog

I’ve cast on three times so far …

Above is the first time and you can see it’s twisted – like a mobius strip. It might all end badly.

400 Posts!

This is my 400th post!

What I have enjoyed most about blogging is looking back and seeing firstly what I have done and secondly how I did it. I’ve been blogging for almost 5 years (it will be 5 years on the 18th of March). In that time I have learnt how to free motion quilt, knit socks, foundation piece blocks using my sewing machine and applique. I have bought two new sewing machines (this one and this one), started a home business and stopped, started designing my own quilts and socks and digitising embroidery designs. I think I have narrowed my interests down to quilting, knitting and machine embroidery.

Now the girls are at school full time I think I should be achieving more, but those 6 hours just fly by – it doesn’t help when I do things like go and see this movie (by the way it was very good).

Well, let’s see what the next 400 posts bring!

Binding

I’m  binding this quilt. I’m using the same technique as last time

  • Attach the binding to the back of the quilt.
  • Fold to the front and top stitch close to the edge of the fold.

This time I used 2.5 inch strips rather than 2. Just because I had 2.5 inch strips left over from cutting the quilt pieces. It does seem to make things less tight.

I also like to zig zag in the seam allowance once I’ve attached the binding to the back. It just flattens everything and makes for a nicer binding.

Another Finished Object – Two Socks

I finished the second sock! These came together very easily and I might be a convert to toe up construction.

There are some great instructions here.

Quilting Again

I’ve begun quiting this quilt – I’m free-motion quilting using a double heart pattern (it’s from Quilting Arts magazine June July 2011). See below

It’s coming together quite nicely, but I have trouble covering the quilt in a fluid direction (I have to stop and start).

Joining Wadding

I like to join pieces of wadding (or quilt batting) together – it’s such a waste throwing out the off-cuts.

I abut the two pieces together – no overlapping and join them with a zig zag stitch. I use a multiple zig zag, but I’m sure a normal zig zag would work as well.

I’ve used this method several times and had no problems with the wadding coming apart or shifting. You just want to make sure there isn’t any lumps along the join (no overlapping)

Dino Quilt is Finished

I finished my Dino Quilt. Above is the front and below is the back.

I free-motion quilted it using a stippling pattern. I found this to be quite tricky simply because of the size of the quilt, but in the end I’m pleased with the results. As always, I could do with more practice.

I tried a new binding technique. I remembered what happened last time and followed my own advice. I cut the binding strips 2 inches wide, attached them to the back first and then machine sewed them to the front.

Still not completely perfect, but I am happy with the results.

Audible Books

While sewing or quilting I listen to audio books. I find the books at audible.com and I use the audible app on my ipod to listen to them. This system works well for me – I even wrote a review of the latest ‘reading’.

I thought I would blog about this because it is always nice to know how other people do things.

When I’m knitting I watch DVDs – mostly period dramas (my latest is Downton Abbey – so beautiful).
