Third Time Lucky!

This is my third attempt at starting this top – I kept twisting it when I joined the round (despite my best efforts). I referred to Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Knitting Workshop and knit the first 5 cm flat and then joined the round. I think it’s OK now, but this is my last attempt. If this doesn’t work I’m starting something else.

New Quilt Design

I’m going to make Miss A a quilt using three fabrics (from my stash) – it is going to consist of big plus signs.

I’m still working on the baby clothes quilt (I cut a few more squares everyday) and the knitting project (I’m about to start knitting the lace pattern), but they are both such big slow-moving projects I wanted something else as well.

Easter Applique Finished

I finished the easter t-shirts.

Both designs are from here. Miss P’s is crooked, but there was no way I was unpicking it and trying again!

New Look

I decided it was time to update things a bit. A new header and I changed the blog roll…

Back to the Drawing Board

This egg turned out to be very squat.

I’ve gone back to basics: drawn my design on a piece of graph paper (the right size) and then digitised it.

This new design is slightly too big for one hooping –  hopefully this will mean the pieces won’t be so fiddly.

Both girls have decided they don’t want my egg design for their easter t-shirts, so I’ve let them look through my design collection.

Miss P picked this one …

And Miss A this one …

Foundation Piecing Using Embroidery Machine

I’ve interrupted work on the baby quilt to make the Easter T-Shirts this year we are going to have a crazy patchwork egg. I am going to foundation piece it using my embroidery machine. Above is the design I made using Embird Studio – this is the third version and I suspect their might be more.

Here it is stitched out …

The corners don’t meet properly and the top is a bit pointy – onto version 4.

New Projects

I have two new, rather large, projects on the go. The first is a quilt made from the girls baby clothes.

This seemed like a lovely idea, but cutting the squares and rectangles is very time consuming.

The other project is this one by Amy Herzog

I’ve cast on three times so far …

Above is the first time and you can see it’s twisted – like a mobius strip. It might all end badly.

400 Posts!

This is my 400th post!

What I have enjoyed most about blogging is looking back and seeing firstly what I have done and secondly how I did it. I’ve been blogging for almost 5 years (it will be 5 years on the 18th of March). In that time I have learnt how to free motion quilt, knit socks, foundation piece blocks using my sewing machine and applique. I have bought two new sewing machines (this one and this one), started a home business and stopped, started designing my own quilts and socks and digitising embroidery designs. I think I have narrowed my interests down to quilting, knitting and machine embroidery.

Now the girls are at school full time I think I should be achieving more, but those 6 hours just fly by – it doesn’t help when I do things like go and see this movie (by the way it was very good).

Well, let’s see what the next 400 posts bring!

Binding

I’m  binding this quilt. I’m using the same technique as last time

  • Attach the binding to the back of the quilt.
  • Fold to the front and top stitch close to the edge of the fold.

This time I used 2.5 inch strips rather than 2. Just because I had 2.5 inch strips left over from cutting the quilt pieces. It does seem to make things less tight.

I also like to zig zag in the seam allowance once I’ve attached the binding to the back. It just flattens everything and makes for a nicer binding.
