Mod 9 Backing Plan B

Something happened my nine patch strips weren’t the same size, so no nine patch blocks on the back. Instead I’ve decided to have two strips of alternating blocks and the rest a plain purple.

Like this …

The background in the above picture is the plain purple I plan to use.

Time and Mod 9

As it has been school holidays here, there has not been much time for craft. But I have had a chance to think a bit more about craft, time and blogging. I’m finding that, in order to have blog content, I’m focusing on quick projects. I’m not spending time enjoying the journey or experimenting. I want it finished quickly and perfectly.  However, I intend to spend more time thinking, experimenting, planning and just enjoying crafting.

I have finished the top of my Mod 9 quilt…

And in the spirit of the above, i.e. taking my time, I plan to piece the back.

In the centre I plan to have three nine patch blocks (although I might only have enough fabric for two) and the rest of the back will be a plain fabric.

These are the fabrics I plan to use for the nine patches …

Mod 9 Quilt Top

I’ve sewn the blocks of my ‘Mod 9‘ quilt together (yes, it is hanging on my clothes line). I plan to add a white border. I’m happy with how this has come together – all of my seams are aligned (very unusual).

Mod 9 Quilt

I’ve continued working on this quilt. I’ve sewn the squares into strips and now I’m sewing the strips into blocks.

To get the effect I want, accuracy is vital. So when I sew the strips together, I ensure the seams for each square are lined up and I press the seam allowance from one strip one way and on the second strip the opposite way.

It’s probably clearer in the second image.

Advent Calendar – 6

All of the pockets are attached! I need to sew the buttons onto the tree and finish off the ornaments.

Advent Calendar – 5

A pile of pockets ready to be sewn on and ornaments in a production line …

The ornaments are a machine embroidery design from here. They’ve used velvet as the base whereas I have used felt, so I’m not sure how to cut the edges away (they used a candle and melted the edges, but I’m not sure if that would work with felt). I’ve made 8 so only 16 to go … (I am feeling positive that I will get it done in time).

Advent Calendar 3

The quilting is done …

The tree, stem and pot are free motion quilted and I used a hanging diamond pattern on the white background.

Here is a closer look …

Advent Calendar 2

I’m quilting the base and I’ve made one ornament …

The Star consists of a front and a back and I didn’t manage to sew them together very well.

Advent Calendar

I’ve decided to make an Advent Calendar – just to put myself under a bit more pressure. I got the idea from here, but it’s developed a mind of it’s own.

Each pocket will have a number embroidered on it. I haven’t quite decided on the position of the pockets yet – the one above is just placed on the quilt.

I’m going to sew buttons onto the tree from which we can hang ornaments (they’ll be stored in the pockets).

The ornaments are going to like this …

The number is on the back of the ornament. There will also be a star, tree and stocking (so six of each type).

I still have all of the pockets and the ornaments to sew as well as quilting the base. So lots to do and not much time.
