First Finished Item 2013

Socks are Finished

Socks are Finished

I finished my socks.

The toes are a bit pointy and I could have made the leg a bit longer, but they’re finished and they’re not saggy!

Next up a swatches for my craftsy class.

This and That

Pineapple Quilt Block in Progress

Pineapple Quilt Block in Progress

The Pineapple quilt block has proven to be quite difficult, but I think I have a plan of action sorted. The above is a work in progress.

My Heavy Metal knitting needles arrived today – very keen to get started on the next pair of socks. I ordered the needles in late December and I knew they would be shipped late January, so I’m impressed they have arrived so soon.

I found more Misti Alpaca yarn – this one (in Confetti) – at my local store. I also have this one, my stash is becoming a but unmanageable.

I’ve joined this course and watched the introduction and now I need to get ready to knit the practice swatches. I need more hours in the day.

I’m tempted to buy The Principles of Knitting as a Kindle book – lighter (have you seen the size of this thing) and an instant download.

Socking

Second Sock Progress

Second Sock Progress

School went back today! Both girls are happy with their classes, so it should be a smooth start to the year.

It was lovely to go grocery shopping on my own!

As you can see from the image, the second sock is progressing. I am hoping to get the foot finished today, but time is rushing by and I have a new student starting today (in my real life I am a maths tutor), so I doubt I will get onto it.

I do like the magic loop method and will stick with it in future, but I am very keen to learn how to knit two socks at once. I have this book and I am determined to give it a go with my next pair of socks.

Sock Progress

Second Sock

Second Sock

I thought it was time I got on with the second sock!

The knitting is quite handy because I can do it anywhere – at the pool, waiting for the girls to finish their craft sessions (today they’re making a Superhero at our local library), standing in yet another queue somewhere.

I’m very keen to get this sock finished, so I can start on this yarn. I have a stitch pattern in mind – Eyelet Mock Cable Ribbing (it is from the latest Sockupied magazine). I’ve set myself a schedule – today I need to finish the leg. I don’t have a lot of time at the moment, it’s school holidays, or more correctly I seem to be wasting what time I have.

Asymmetric Cables Version 3

Another Attempt At Asymmetric Cables

Another Attempt At Asymmetric Cables

Once again an astute observer would notice that the above is a plain sock and not an asymmetric sock – this pattern kicked my bottom!

I kept getting in a muddle – cable needle at the front (oh no it should have been at the back!) you know how it goes. I really couldn’t focus and as it is school holidays I’m not sure quite what I was thinking. This plain sock is coming together nicely and I think I could probably knit it in my sleep. The heel flap is in heel stitch, but otherwise it is just a plain vanilla sock.

We’ve been away on holiday – here – it was hot and some of the beaches were closed because of sharks (you can read about it here), but I feel like I’ve had a break.

I took this photo on my run …

It was lovely to run along the coast and along bush tracks.

Asymmetirc Cables Version 2

Second Attempt at Asymmetric Cables

Second Attempt at Asymmetric Cables

Astute observers among you would notice that although my sock doesn’t seem to have progressed, I have changed the method of construction. It all went pear shaped – because I didn’t read the pattern properly. I decided that given that I needed to start again I should try the magic loop method (I found great instructions here). I really like it. No more almost taking my eye out with one of the needles or having one of the double pointed needles falling out because I was knitting loosely.

It might also help that I’ve switched to a very nice Addi circular needle rather than the dodgy cheap metals ones from before (you can see them in the image on this page).

While knitting I’ve been watching Parade’s End.

It is beautiful to watch (always good in a period drama), the acting is brilliant and it has a more cynical (or perhaps honest) view of Edwardian England – definitely worth watching.

Sock – Asymmetric Cables

Start of Asymmetric Cables

Start of Asymmetric Cables

I’ve started a new sock project eventually they should look like this …

AsymetricCables2

How they Look in the Book

The pattern is Asymmetric Cables from The Sock Knitting Master Class. So far I have impressed myself by having the right number of stitches whenever there is an increase of decrease!

I can’t say where the wool is from (I’ve lost the label!).

Here’s One I Prepared Earlier

I finished Miss P’s socks. I’ve been working away at these while supervising the girls swimming and while watching TV in the evenings. In fact I became slightly obsessed – ‘just one more round’ – I’m sure all of the knitters understand.

The yarn was Filatura Di Crosa Maxime Print, which I bought from here – and I really like how it turned out. The colours are beautiful.

I’m now ready for a new knitting challenge.

I have a couple of ideas.

This …

Which is from Suvi S – using Sublime Cashmere Merino Silk DK  (Shade 52).

Or this for Miss A …

Which is from Georgie Hallam – using Patons Zhivago Colour 4443.

Planning

It’s school holidays here. We staggered to the end of term two – everyone is tired and a little bit sick. I’m looking forward to a break in the routine (no making lunches at 7 am or being at the school at 3pm) and more knitting time. I’ve almost finished the Gull Lace Scarf – about half a ball to go, so I need a new project.

Miss P is very keen on socks, so I shall make her another pair. She has picked the pink/purple yarn (Filatura Di Crosa Maxime Print)  in the above image. I’m thinking a simple sock something that can be knitted while watching TV – I’m currently making my way through The Pallisers. It is very dated and obviously filmed on a set, but certainly watchable.
