Applique Cushion Finished

I’ve finished the cushion for Miss A.

A few things I discovered; vliesofix is fabulous, but there must be a cheaper way of buying it,  a finer blanket stitch was best (Mode 2 36 on my Janome 6600p), as the envelope style backing is quite generous a button is not required.

Here is a closer look at the applique…

I like the way the frill (extra bit around the edge of the cushion is created. Once the cushion cover has been assembled, turned right side out and pressed, you sew just inside the border seam.

Applique Success

I’ve started stitching around the edges of my applique cushion. This one …

I’m using bobbin fill on the bottom and rayon embroidery thread on the top (Robison Anton Rayon). I’m using a blanket stitch (stitch number Mode 2 35 if you have a Janome 6600p – I’m also using the F2 foot, which makes it much easier to see what you are doing) with a length and width of 1.5mm.

I’m surprised by how easily this is all coming together – it’s not perfect by any means, but easier than I expected.

A Purple Sleeve

A sleeve for my body. I’m really enjoying working with this yarn (from here).  The only problem is that I have quite a stash of other stuff.

Big Needles and Chunky Wool

The joy of big needles and chunky wool! I’m making rapid progress on this jumper. It is destined for one of the girls and it is going to be seamless with a bit of a cable pattern on the yoke.

The yarn is 12 ply from Bendigo Woolen Mills. (Rustic in Damson Shade).

Long Tail Cast On

Look at how long my long tail is and I still have 34 stitches to cast on! I will have to start again.

I finished Knitting the Socks

I finished the socks!

I’m going to have a bit of a break from sock knitting because I want to knit something else – I’m going to use my 12 ply yarn from here.

On a completely different note what is the difference between SSK and K2tog tbl?

Dinosaur Quilt

The individual blocks are finished. I’m going to use white for the sashing and I’m just waiting for that to arrive (from here).

May/June and now July socks

Oh dear! A pair of socks a month has completely fallen by the wayside.

I have finished one sock and I’m about a quarter of the way through the other! I’ve been watching North and South while knitting – what a fantastic adaptation)

On a completely different topic I did buy some lovely Alpaca yarn while on holiday in Balingup (shade 940) .

Applique Cushion

This is destined to be a cushion cover.

It has been sitting in my ‘must get around to it’ pile for so long I can”t remember even buying it, but I am determined that this is the year to complete projects and declutter the craft stash. The design is from here and the fabric is bits and pieces from my stash.

Using Vliesofix to hold the applique pieces in place made everything much easier – of course I still have to stitch around each piece, but at least I don’t have to worry about the pieces falling off or slipping around. Just need to remember draw the shapes on the smooth side and iron the rough side to the wrong side of the fabric – I had at least one gooey iron incident when I ironed the wrong side.

Hair Clips

I’m trying to find something quick (and reasonably inexpensive) to make. Miss A is having a party soon and I want to put something that is not cheap plastic rubbish in her party bags. It is also a ‘fete year’ at school, so something quick and cheap to make would be good for the craft stall.

These butterfly hair clips are felt covers for normal snap clips (the kind you use for holding quilt bindings in place). The design is from here.

A few tips – the colour of the bobbin thread does matter (despite instructions to the contrary), machine sew the butterfly to the clip cover (rather than hand sewing or gluing) and finally use a tear-away or wash-away stabiliser (I used calico and it means there are little cotton bits sticking out of the edges).
