Sock! A Finished Sock

One Finished Rose Rib Sock

One Finished Rose Rib Sock

Elizabeth Zimmerman told us to “Knit on with confidence and hope, through all crises” and that is what I have been trying to do – there has been some strange goings on with my oldest daughter, her friends and her friends’ mothers, but enough of that let us return to the knitting!

This is my Rose Rib sock. I wanted to do something different with this sock. It has no cuff, a band heel and a different toe (no kitchener stitch!). It has come together well and fits well – now for sock number two! (I have started it …)

I Have Turned the Corner

Turning the heel

Turning the heel

I have been knitting away (while watching Once – fudging a bit of the lace as required) and I have turned the heel and am onto the gusset.

As I wanted to try different techniques with this sock, I have attempted a Band Heel. So far everything seems to be going to plan. I wrote myself instructions following this Knitty article.

I’m really enjoying my signature arts needles.

Progress

Progress Being Made on my Rose Rib Socks

Progress Being Made on my Rose Rib Socks

I like stories of all different kinds – novels, plays, movies, TV series – I suspect it is because I am nosy and like to know how people live. This means I usually watch something while knitting, which sometimes means my lace pattern can go a bit awry. At the moment I’m watching the second series of Once Upon the Time. I do like this show mostly because it is so beautiful to look at the costumes are spectacular ….

and I could quite happily move into Mary Margaret’s apartment.

The show itself is an interesting mix of fairy tales, swashbuckling adventure and good versus evil – and the villains are a bit conflicted, so I find it quite compelling.

All this means I look for excuses to watch it and therefore to knit. I should really be cleaning the house/buying food, but I will just watch one more episode! Besides some of the knits on the show are quite inspirational.

SewWitty's Sock

SewWitty’s Sock

I have written a sock pattern. I wanted to try something different. It has an interesting cuff (not my normal k2p2 rib), I am going to attempt a band heel and I am trying a different toe style.

Check out my new signature art double points – they are fabulous – there is no going back.

The yarn is from Bendigo part of the sock yarn range. I’m in love and it is only $10 a ball!

Slow Progress

Sock Progress

Sock Progress

So the second sock is progressing. I’ve turned the heel and now have to pick up the edge stitches.

I’ve been reading a book that mentions an over coat made of vicuna. I had never even heard of vicuna! I was intrigued. I thought maybe you could get it as yarn and knit something. Well you can, but  I could only find 25g balls for $310 yes that’s right $310! Plus I could only find brown!

Second Sockitis

Second Sock Progress

Second Sock Progress

I have finished the first sock!

I am slowly making my way through the second sock – there are so many other things I want to be doing.

I have been watching a few DVDs though – while I am making slow progress. I have re-watched the 1995 Pride and Prejudice (the one with Colin Firth) and I have just started watching the first season of The Newsroom, I really enjoy it, but does anyone else think they talk super fast?

Progress and a New Skill

I've turned the corner

I’ve turned the corner

Miss P’s socks are progressing slowly. This is very meditative knitting – I find myself focusing on each stitch.

I did discover while knitting these socks that I have been doing SSK wrong! I could never understand why SSK and K2tog tbl were different (mine certainly weren’t!). I didn’t realise you slip the two stitches knit wise! I had been doing it Purl wise!

I have also finally worked out which way the decreases will lean! SSK is left and K2Tog is right!

Best Laid Plans

Owl Socks for Miss P

Owl Socks for Miss P

I have started a new pair of socks for Miss P. She is the only one who likes my hand knitted socks – and fortunately she has little feet.

My plan was to have owl cables around the top of the sock – like this …

Owl Cable Knitting Chart

Owl Cable Knitting Chart

You might even be able to see the owl cables on my sock. What didn’t occur to me was that I needed to knit the owl upside down so that it would be the right way up when you where the socks! Now my owls are hanging upside down like bats.

I have been able to squish a bit of extra knitting time into my day. I have a stress fracture in my foot (5th metatarsal if anyone is interested) and instead of running I have been using our stationary bike. I have discovered it is possible to knit while exercising (although my hands to get a bit sweaty!). Talk about multi-tasking I;m riding my bike, knitting and watching TV (I just finished watching this – very good it reminded me a bit of A Dance to the Music of Time).

A Pair of Socks!

Two Socks!

Two Socks!

I have been away to here …

I was in Paris!

I was in Paris!

IMAG0477

Glastonbury Abbey

We spent all of July travelling – Paris, London, Bath, Cornwall and Hong Kong! We had a fabulous time. The weather was amazing – three weeks in England and only 1 day of rain!

I did take my knitting with me and did little bits here and there and finally finished the second sock at home.

The patten is Almondine from Sock Knitting Master Class and I used a Madelinetosh sock yarn (I think it’s Jade), which I got from here.

I have never been a fan of knitting charts – not that I have done much knitting that requires a chart – but this pattern has converted me. It was much easier to glance at the chart for instructions that to read the various Ps and YOs.

My next knitting project is another pair of socks for Miss P using this yarn. I’m going to make up my own pattern, but I plan on having owl cables like these (I was so disappointed that this jumper didn’t fit either of my girls).

Half a sock

image

Half of my second  sock is finished.

I had a little bit of trouble with this sock – I kept knitting only half a round before moving to the next round. In the end I had to rip what I had done and start the whole thing over again. I just couldn’t seem to maintain focus.

While knitting I have been watching the The Paradise on DVD. Definitely recommend it if you like bonnet dramas – it was beautiful to look at, had a bit of romance and intrigue. Now I am going to watch Mr Selfridge .
