Swatches and the start of new projects
I’ve been able to get some knitting done while watching television (this series).
I have swatched and started working on the February Fitted Pullover (again – you might remember I have tried this once before). The yarn is Sublime Cashmere Merino Silk DK in colour Tease.
I have also swatched and started knitting Hermione’s Everyday Socks. This is yarn I bought from the Melbourne Art Gallery markets (Hawthorn Cottage Yarns).
I suspect progress will be slow.

Sewwitty’s 2014
This year I finished a few sampler blocks – but not the entire quilt, two wraps (Denim Wrap and Hitchiker), a pair of socks and learnt how to crochet.
This year my New Year’s resolution was to do less and just be – several people I know have terminal illnesses and I think it might be time to just enjoy life without rushing from one thing to another always trying to do more, be more etc. This means I am hoping to spend more time pottering about with craft – but no rushing to the end I’m just going to enjoy the process.

Sewwitty’s Plain Sock
My copy of Downton Abbey series 5 arrived, which meant there was a lot of sitting on the sofa time knitting. I just love the costumes …
I have turned the heel, picked up stitches and now I am decreasing back to the original number. I always feel that I am almost finished when I get to this point.

I’ve also finished three of the above blocks! I’ve worked out that it is better to do a little bit, go off and do something else, a little bit more etc.

Plain Vanilla Sock
While trudging my way through the Denim Wrap I was very keen to start knitting another pair of socks, but I was determined to finish one project before I started another (I feel quite smug that I manage to do that). Anyway, I decided I am just going to get started and see where this yarn leads – so far it is top-down and a K2P2 rib.
The yarn is Hungry Hungry Dystopos from Indigodragonfly – let’s not think about the air miles involved in that journey!

Two Socks Practice Tube
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a person with three projects must be in want of a fourth!
I have always been intrigued by the idea of knitting two socks at once – no more second sock syndrome!
Kate Atherley has a course at Annie’s called Magic Socks: Knit 2 Socks in 1 and I decided to give it a go.
This course is great. Kate explains things very well – everything is very clear and simple. So far I am just knitting my practice tube, which I will use as a tension square before knitting the actual socks. I am finding I am quite slow as I am not able to hold both yarns at the same time, but I am sure with a bit of practice I will improve.
This technique does require quite a bit of focus. I can see how easy it would be to lose focus and end up knitting the two socks together! For this reason I think this technique will just be a novelty technique in my repertoire and I will just revert to knitting two socks using double pointed needles (I wasn’t that taken with the magic loop method either). However, it is always good to learn something new.
If you are contemplating this course, then I say just jump in and have a go. Kate’s a great teacher, very personable I wish I could attend one of her classes in person, but Canada is a long way from Australia!

Rose Rib Socks Finished
I finished the second of my Rose Rib socks – it didn’t go so well as the first.
I am not sure what went wrong, but when I picked up stitches after turning the heel I picked up 10 on one side and 14 on the other – that can’t be good. I fudged a bit and it seemed to work out in the end.

Rose Rib Second Sock
I’ve started on the second sock. I had real trouble with the cuff – started it at least three times. I don’t recall it being this tricky the first time round. I’m on to the leg, so I hope the rest will be a breeze.

One Finished Rose Rib Sock
Elizabeth Zimmerman told us to “Knit on with confidence and hope, through all crises” and that is what I have been trying to do – there has been some strange goings on with my oldest daughter, her friends and her friends’ mothers, but enough of that let us return to the knitting!
This is my Rose Rib sock. I wanted to do something different with this sock. It has no cuff, a band heel and a different toe (no kitchener stitch!). It has come together well and fits well – now for sock number two! (I have started it …)

Turning the heel
I have been knitting away (while watching Once – fudging a bit of the lace as required) and I have turned the heel and am onto the gusset.
As I wanted to try different techniques with this sock, I have attempted a Band Heel. So far everything seems to be going to plan. I wrote myself instructions following this Knitty article.
I’m really enjoying my signature arts needles.
