Sampler is Finished

I finished this sampler – I’ve blurred the name and birth date in the middle.

Here is the back …

I used 2.5 inch strips to bind the quilt. This worked much better for me than 2 inch strips.

I quilted in straight lines using a stitch length of 3.5mm – the normal setting for my machine is 2.2mm – I think the longer length does make for nicer quilting.

Easter Applique

It’s almost Easter – I wish the weather would be more April-like (it’s still warm!). I like to make the girls applique T-shirts for Christmas and Easter.  Above is Miss P’s T-shirt. The design is from Bunnycup. Below is Miss A’s – her design is from Designs by JuJu.

Quilting Again

I’m feeling re-motivated and keen to get back into crafting. I’ve started quilting this sampler. I’m quilting in straight lines on the diagonal (using my Accufeed foot – it is fabulous) and purple masking tape (it’s low tac) to mark the lines.

Frou Frou Skirt is Finished

I finished this skirt, which I started away back in October. Miss A is wearing it at ballet – I’ve blurred out her face because I’m a bit concerned about internet safety.

This skirt looks great and as the waistband is shirred I finally learnt how to do that (like most things it wasn’t too hard when you actually have a go). However, I found the instructions a bit confusing – diagrams would have helped – in the end I made up my own way of attaching the waistband. Also, the seam allowances were only 1/4 of an inch and there wasn’t enough room to finish the edges so I’m worried the whole thing is going to fray.

I’ve almost finished one March sock!

Dolls

Miss A and Miss P went camping on the weekend. I had 24 hours to myself – at home! I decided to start (and hopefully finish) a sewing project. The doll above is the result. I made each of the girls one. It is a machine embroidery pattern that you use your normal sewing machine to complete. The pattern is from here. The instructions were very comprehensive and easy to follow. Miss A is particularly taken and has been ‘designing’ new outfits for her doll (called Ariel).

I feel re-motivated to finish off a few other languishing projects. My March sock, however, is still on going. It’s going to have to be an April/March sock.

March Socks

The above image is not mine – it’s from here, but these are the socks I’m knitting this month. They have quite a complicated stitch pattern (for me), but I’m loving how it’s all coming together. I’m enjoying the focus required to keep to the pattern – the whole world stills as I work on my sock.

I made the mistake of using a self-patterning yarn, which hides the pattern. I think I might be able to get this pair finished in time. I’ve knit the leg of one sock, so almost half way and it’s not quite halfway through March.

On a completely different note I’ve bought the Owlet pattern from Kate Davies and some yarn from here in Damson. I’m not sure about a 12 ply yarn in Australia, but at least it will be quick to knit.

Another Quilt Finished

I finished another quilt. It’s the same pattern as this One. This time I stipple quilted it …

It was much quicker to do than my normal swirly pattern.

I attached the binding to the back and then folded it to the front. The plan being that I would stitch close to the edge of the fold and it would look great and be much quicker than hand sewing. However, it was much harder to sew close to the edge in a straight line. Once again I ended up hiding my dodgy stitching with a decorative pattern!

Quilt Finished

I finished my quilt – the photo is a bit strange because I laid the quilt on the floor. The pattern is from Two Little Banshees (she has a tutorial).

I just quilted it using a swirly free motion quilting pattern.

Here is the back …

I decided to try machine sewing the binding down (rather than hand sewing the back). My plan was to stitch in the ditch on the front and therefore catch the binding at the back. Good plan? Well it sounds good in theory, but the practice proved to be much harder. In the end I used a decorative stitch to ensure that all of the binding was caught at the back. However, I was happy with the end result. Next time I’m going to machine sew the binding to the back (the reverse of my usual practice) and then machine sew it to the front (as close I can to the fold).

I’ve just started another version of this quilt, but more of that later.

February Sock is finished

I finished my February socks! Well ahead of schedule. These are ‘plain vanilla’ socks – the cuff is 2×2 rib and the rest stocking stitch.

I used heel stitch for the heel flap. The heel flap was 12 rows. I like to make the heel flap 3/4 or 2/3 of the number of stitches in the flap. It just seems to fit much better. But which fraction to use 3/4 or 2/3? I use the guide on knitty.com (less than 50 stitches use 2/3 otherwise 3/4 and the 50 refers to the entire sock not just the heel flap).

The toe is just a simple wedge and I used kitchener stitch to graft the final 8 stitches.

This was a very easy project (not to mention quick), but I’m going to try something more challenging for March.

Quilting

I am busy working on my ‘secret squirrel’ quilt. I’m free-motion quilting in a swirly loopy pattern.
